Right in the midst of Olympic fortnight, the country’s biggest team of teenagers took to the famous stage of the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate British identity, excellence and youthful vitality. We reunited with our principal conductor Vasily Petrenko, visionary pianist Joanna MacGregor and ondes martenot player Cynthia Millar for one of the most boundless, exciting orchestral works ever written: Messiaen’s epic Turangalîla-Symphonie. The concert also featured Varèse’s Tuning Up; a brand new work written for us by the sensational young composer Nico Muhly called Gait; and HandsFree composed by Anna Meredith and choreographed by David Ogle – the body percussion and beatboxing work that sees us performing using no instruments at all, and one of the PRS for Music Foundation’s ‘New Music 20×2012’ commissions for the Cultural Olympiad.
