New NYO recording
Now available: a new NYO recording for a major international record label
Last Spring, the NYO and Paul Daniel earned rave reviews for their performance of the breathtakingly fun and feisty Overture, Waltz and Finale from Thomas Adès’ Powder Her Face.
The Independent said ‘The sound which greeted Paul Daniel’s down-beat at the start of the overture to Adès’s Powder Her Face came with electrifying force. And as the orchestra negotiated the rapids of two movements of this sophisticated work, one forgot they weren’t professionals.’ The Times said ‘colossal energy and exuberant physicality…dazzling brass and impeccable tempo changes It made me massively hopeful for the future of classical music.’
If you missed the performance – or if you want to relive the excitement again – you can now hear it on the NYO’s first recording in many years for a major international label. Our live performance of the Powder Her Face suite forms part of EMI’s new disc of Adès’ latest orchestral works, just released. We share the disc with none other than the Berlin Philharmonic, fittingly conducted by Sir Simon Rattle – who like Thomas Adès himself – used to be a member of the NYO. Since their days as percussionists in the NYO, Rattle has gone on to become one of the most celebrated conductors in the world, and Adès one of the freshest and most acclaimed voices in British composition.
In the first reviews, Metro says the NYO’s contribution is an ‘added bonus…all very jazz-meets-tango and highly amusing’. International Record Review calls our performance ‘a memorable romp projected with an impressive combination of finesse and high spirits’. We’ll keep you posted here with all the disc’s upcoming reviews. In the meantime, you can buy it for yourself from Amazon, Play or HMV online.
